About This Technique
Kibisu Gaeshi (踵返), or the heel trip (often referred to as an "ankle pick" in wrestling), is a hand technique (te-waza) in Judo where you snatch the opponent's heel or ankle with one hand while driving their upper body backward with the other to trip them over their trapped leg.
IJF Competition Ban: Because modern International Judo Federation (IJF) rules strictly forbid grasping the legs or trousers below the belt with the hands, Kibisu Gaeshi is illegal in official Judo competitions. However, it remains a fundamental Kodokan throw and a core takedown in freestyle wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), and MMA.
