About This Technique
Sukui Nage (掬投), or the scoop throw, is a classic hand technique (te-waza) in Judo where you scoop under the opponent's hips or legs to lift and drive them backward onto the mat.
Modern IJF Judo: Because direct leg grabs below the belt are prohibited in competitive judo, traditional leg-scooping Sukui Nage is illegal in modern competition. Modern variations adapt by gripping the belt, jacket, or torso instead of the pants to execute a similar rearward scooping projection.
