The Judo Nomad Project

Here at Judoroo, we believe that the essence of judo extends far beyond the four corners of our local mats. It is a universal language, a shared culture of respect, and a global family. Nothing embodies this philosophy more profoundly than The Judo Nomad Project, an extraordinary global initiative spearheaded by the inspiring French judoka, Julien Brulard.

Through our platforms at Judoroo and The Judo Lab, alongside our roots at the Shin Gi Tai club, we are incredibly proud to stand as lifelong supporters and friends of Julien. When Julien brought his worldwide expedition to Australia, we had the distinct honor of hosting him, sharing our homes, our dojo, and our passion for the sport. His stay with us in Queensland left an indelible mark on our community, and we are committed to ensuring his monumental journey continues.

Who is The Judo Nomad?

Julien Brulard, affectionately known as The Judo Nomad, is a man on an unprecedented mission: to visit all 197 countries in the world, teaching judo entirely for free. After training in France's prestigious national system (including the elite INSEP institute) and earning a master's degree in high-level sport performance, Julien realized his true calling wasn't just competitive glory. Instead, he chose to utilize his deep technical expertise to build bridges across continents, sharing the core values of judo; respect, perseverance and unity; with everyone from remote grassroots dojos to elite international training centers.

His journey is a grueling but beautiful endeavor. Since launching the project, Julien has traveled through more than 65 countries, traversing over 50,000 kilometers. He prioritizes overland and sea travel to minimize his carbon footprint and maximize authentic cultural connections. His immense dedication and adaptive coaching skills even led him to the grandest stage in international sports, where he proudly served as a judo coach at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

A Shared Vision: Judoroo, The Judo Lab, and The Nomad

When Julien visited Australia, he integrated seamlessly into our local judo family. At Shin Gi Tai, we witnessed firsthand his unparalleled ability to adapt his coaching style to fit our culture while strictly retaining the foundational principles of the sport. He doesn't just teach physical techniques; he facilitates a cultural exchange. As Julien has noted in his travels, every region brings a unique flair to judo, whether it's the intense groundwork of Brazil, the dynamic wrestling styles of Georgia, or the sheer heart of under-resourced clubs in developing nations.

Through Judoroo and our specialized venue, The Judo Lab, we are steadfastly committed to backing his vision. We believe in his ultimate goal: to weave isolated dojos, national federations, and individual practitioners into a unified global network where any judoka can walk into a room of strangers anywhere in the world and instantly connect through a shared language of movement and mutual respect.

The Harsh Reality: Why Your Support is Crucial

Undertaking a global expedition of this magnitude is a monumental logistical and financial challenge. The Judo Nomad Project relies entirely on the generosity of the global judo community. Julien offers all of his seminars and lessons for free, firmly believing that judo belongs to everyone and should never be hidden behind a paywall.

However, sustaining this mission costs upwards of €20,000 annually. Travel expenses, visas, and essential logistics constantly threaten to halt his progress, and financial realities have occasionally forced him to temporarily suspend certain tour legs to raise necessary funds. Julien does not stay in luxury hotels or fly first class; he survives through grassroots support, small monthly donations, merchandise sales, and the kindness of local hosts who provide a bed and a warm meal.

He needs our help to keep the project alive. If we want to see judo continue to expand into remote areas, support underfunded federations, and bring the global martial arts community closer together, we must step up and contribute.

How You Can Keep The Judo Nomad Moving

We strongly urge every member of the Judoroo family and the wider Australian judo community to get behind Julien. Your contribution is not just funding a traveler; it is actively fueling a worldwide movement to keep the spirit of judo alive, one mat at a time.
