About This Technique

Kata Guruma (肩車), or the shoulder wheel, is a classic hand technique (te-waza) in Judo—frequently compared to wrestling's fireman's carry. It involves ducking deep beneath the opponent's center of gravity to load them horizontally across your shoulders before dumping them onto the mat.

Modern IJF Judo: Because direct leg grabs below the belt are banned in competitive judo, modern practitioners execute Kata Guruma without touching the legs. They typically drop directly onto one or both knees while using underhooks, armpit wraps, or sleeve/lapel torque to drive the opponent over the shoulders.
