About This Technique

Ashi-Garami (足絡), or the Leg Entanglement, is an official Judo submission technique where the attacker wraps their legs around one of the opponent's legs to isolate it and apply joint-breaking pressure to the knee. By twisting the opponent's leg while controlling their hip, leverage is exerted directly against the knee joint to force a submission.

Modern IJF Judo: All joint locks directed at legs, knees, or ankles (including leg entanglements that twist or pressure the knee joint) are banned in modern IJF competition rules to prevent severe knee injuries, resulting in immediate disqualification (Hansoku-make).
