About This Technique
Uki Goshi (浮腰), or the floating hip throw, is a foundational hip technique (koshi-waza) in Judo and one of Jigoro Kano's favorite throws. It involves wrapping an arm around the opponent's waist to pull them flush against your hip, then rotating your upper body to fling them around your hip without lifting them over it.
Jigoro Kano frequently used Uki Goshi as his primary technique against opponents of all sizes, and it serves as the first hip throw taught in the traditional Kodokan syllabus (Gokyo no Waza).
