About This Dojo

Founded in 1953 by Jack Fielding and John Banfield, Canterbury Amateur Judo Club (CAN-AM-JU) is one of Christchurch’s oldest and most established martial arts institutions. Operating out of a dedicated dojo facility on Magdala Place in Middleton, the non-profit, family-friendly club has served as a cornerstone of the regional judo community for over seven decades.

The club provides age-tailored programs for all skill levels, beginning with early childhood movement sessions (Judo Tumbles for toddlers as young as two) through to peewee, junior, and adult classes. Its weekly schedule balances general fitness, kata, self-defense, and technical skill development alongside IJF-standard competition training for senior athletes.
